Close to Asia Minor, Chios (Greece) is a lush green island in the north east of the Aegean. The north of the island was a Genoese fiefdom for many years during the 15th century and features numerous superb residences surrounded by orchards. A maritime crossroads, Chios port was a strategic commercial hub for trade between europe and Asia. in the centre of the island is the Nea Moni Monastery, a jewel of 11th century Byzantine art set amidst cypresses and pines. This holy place is classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and the mosaics here are said to be among the most beautiful in thecountry.
