  • L’AUSTRAL will sail through silence broken only by the cracking of icebergs, to introduce you to the landscapes of this radiant, virgin land. Day 2 - Reykjavik - Hafnarfjordur (Iceland)
Reykjavik, the "Bay of Smoke": nestled in a bay that protects its dreamlike beauty from the wind, Reykjavik’s rhythm is determined by the infinite movements of the ocean. The capital of Iceland is also merely a stone’s throw away from the magnificent Icelandic outback, as evidenced by the large numbers of Arctic terns and wild geese and duck that are to be found in the town centre! Established in around 874 by a Viking chief, the world’s northernmost capital is simultaneously fierce and fascinating. Nearby, in the rugged lava fields, natural springs throw their turbulent water towards the sky, performing an incredible geyser dance dressed in amber tones. Don’t miss out on this natural resplendence and the reflections of astonishing geological phenomena.

Day 3 - At sea
You’ll cruise through the heart of landscapes heavily punctuated with vertical lines and dotted with vertiginous cliffs and cathedral-like icy giants. Sometimes you will see them tip over or bump into one another and in those moments you will understand the complex nature of this environment, which is both strong and fragile. Icebergs are natural works of art, and they result from an accumulation of snow that is compressed over thousands of years. They set the backdrop for a timeless adventure. When, as you admire them from the deck of LE BORÉAL, these majestic mountains of ice tower over you and the sun shines upon them like a great floodlight, a palette of colours will reflect their extraordinary beauty: deep blue, white, turquoise, or as transparent as pure crystal. Nature’s creative genius will reveal itself before your very eyes in the form of an incredible confusion of ice sculptures.

Day 6 - Nuuk (Greenland)
When Erik the Red, the exiled Norse chief, landed on the coast of Nuuk at the tail end of the 10th century, he found a fertile and welcoming land dotted with fjords. He settled there with a group of his former countrymen, and the Norse remained the principal inhabitants until, over a period of 500 years, their population declined and gave way to the Inuit. Nuuk is situated at the mouth of one of the largest fjords in the world, where the waters never freeze. The town spreads gently out towards the Davis Strait and enjoys an historic centre that is particularly rich in national heritage. The National Museum is home to fabulous collections of items depicting Inuit hunter and fishermen’s lives. Despite being Greenland’s capital city and its largest, Nuuk benefits from the rarefied atmosphere of inaccessibility; it can only be reached by air or sea, as there are no roads on Greenland. The vivid reds, blues, greens and yellows of the houses are a lively contrast to the sombre waters of Greenland and serve to lift the spirits of the locals during the winter months. Nuuk is visually emotive and imbued with the expressions of the tundra, the sea and the sky...

Day 9 - Ilulissat – Disko Bay (Greenland)
At the heart of Disko Bay - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Ilulissat Icefjord provides an extraordinary spectacle of almost surreal beauty. The sculptural icebergs continue their on timeless journey, shimmering with their eternal light. Vast pieces of ice break off from the bergs and rejoin the inexorable movement of the sea. Close by lies the town of Ilulissat, the region’s principal destination. Encircled by icebergs, it has retained a unique mix of traditional Arctic life, with multicoloured wooden houses, huskies and the leather tanners who still work today using the ancient methods of their ancestors.
