Day 3 - Suez Canal (Egypt) Without the waterway linking the Red Sea to the
Mediterranean this part of the world would be an arid sandy desert inhabited by a few nomads. The
town of Port Saïd was born out of a crazy yet ultimately successful project in the 19th century to
build a canal. The Suez Canal slices through 162 km of desert and was inaugurated in 1869 in the
presence of Empress Eugenie, then nationalised by Nasser in 1956. Riding around the town at the
gentle pace of a colourful barouche, you can admire the colonial houses with their large balconies
which have helped forge the reputation and charm of Port Said.

Day 4 - Ain Soukhna (Egypt) On the shores of the Red Sea, Ain Soukhna is the
ideal gateway to explore the oldest Christian monastery in Egypt; St Anthony where 65 Coptic monks
still live today. As a result of being so far away in the heart of the desert, the occupants
escaped the troubles of the Arab conquest and continued their intellectual activities until the end
of the 15th century.

Day 5 -Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) Not far from here on the southernmost tip of
the Sinai Desert, Sharm El Sheikh offers you a truly amazing undersea world. Nearby is the imposing
St Catherine’s Monastery, a Greek Orthodox building enclosed by a wall built by Emperor Justinian
in 527. The monastery stands on the Biblical site of the Burning Bush at an altitude of 5,000 ft.
Today it is home to around 20 monks most of whom hail from Mount Athos in Greece. The icon
collection is quite exceptional illustrating over 1,400 years of history.
