The Forces of Nature, Economy and Politics Your voyage of discovery into
Europe's past and future begins with the timeless beauty of nature. On the small island of
Texel in the Wadden Sea, a hike in the nature reserve De Slufter*
takes you to the protected area beyond the dune belt. In Antwerp, you can follow
the traces of history - in the 16th century, the city was one of the wealthiest worldwide, and it
has preserved a magnificent heritage of guild houses and baroque churches to the present day. On
the expert excursion: Europe's development in the light of education and trade*
with the historian Marta Adams, you will visit the printing establishment of the humanist Christoph
Plantin, today a museum and UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, and explore the heart of the at
times most important European trade metropolis. Or you may wish to get to know Antwerp's
Jewish quarter* by visiting the largest Jewish community in Europe. The political
centre of the continent awaits you in Brussels*, while Rouen
takes you back to the Middle Ages - on a walk through the historic district*. The
expert excursion: On the trails of Jeanne d'Arc* with our historian shows you
Rouen from a different perspective and includes a visit to the memorial church, the architecture of
which commemorates the fate of the French patron saint. Alternatively, Claude Monet's
garden in Giverny* will reveal to you what inspired the ingenious painter to create his
impressionistic masterpieces.
Great Britain's Fabulous Mysteries and History A new day, a new country - near
Southampton, mystic stone circles present you with an enigma - was the gigantic monument
really erected by the Druids? Did it serve to calculate the lunar orbit? Set out in search of
answers in Stonehenge and Salisbury*. "Less mysterious, but equally fascinating" are the
words that best describe one of the foundations of English legislation in mediaeval Salisbury
Cathedral - here lies the most well-preserved copy of the Great Charter of 1215. On the expert
excursion: Magna Charta Libertatum*, Marta Adams will explain its historic relevance to you.
Take a look behind the walls of a 900-year-old building and into the world of today's aristocracy
on the excursion Beaulieu Palace and vintage car museum*. This British eccentricity coupled
with French flair also awaits you on the picturesque Channel Island of Sark, which is
governed by a seigneur to the present day. Enjoy a walk including a visit to La Seigneurie
Gardens*. The larger neighbouring island of Guernsey invites you for a coastal hike*
with the appeal of wild and romantic cliffs, pine forest and fantastic views across the English
Channel.
Discoveries on the Iberian Peninsula In Bilbao, the capital of the
Basque Country, you will be faced with the tradition of a proud people - combined with avant-garde
architecture. Look forward to the highlights of Bilbao and the Guggenheim Museum*, the
undulating constructional design of which presents a fascinating reflection of the nearby sea. New
perspectives will also be revealed to you by Marta Adams on the expert excursion: Bilbao's
economy between iron extraction and "Guggenheim effect"* - an exciting journey through the
city's varied past. Find out more about an important chapter of Spanish history when you set out
from Gijon with Marta Adams on the expert excursion: Reconquista - the reconquest of the
Iberian Peninsula*, which takes you to Oviedo. The city is regarded as the cradle of Spain
because it became the focal point of the Christian reconquest after the invasion by the Moors. Or
discover Oviedo - Principado de Asturias*. An extraordinary nature experience awaits you on
the occasion of a Zodiac landing on the Cies Islands. The uninhabited islands are a premiere
for the BREMEN and invite you for a hike in a magnificent landscape. The Monument to the
Discoveries announces the end of your "Expedition Knowledge" - via the Tejo, the BREMEN reaches the
buoyant metropolis of Lisbon, where you will spend an atmospheric final evening.
