An Arctic Midsummer Night's Dream- Kangerlussuaq - Longyearbyen
MS Bremen - June 29 - July 15 2012

Voyage BRE1213

Greenland's coasts and the remote Spitsbergen archipelago combine to create an intense and exceptionally multifaceted Arctic experience on this expedition. Deep fjords, the ice of Disko Bay, the culture of the Inuit and a fascinating animal world awaken your spirit of discovery. The ice-reinforced BREMEN and her Zodiacs take you to places other ships can only sail past - and which are particularly impressive.
Visiting the Inuit in Greenland
One highlight of your expedition awaits you right at the beginning when the BREMEN sets course for Disko Bay. While cruising or during rides with the Zodiacs, you will be mesmerised by an unforgettable scenario: Icebergs of all shapes are slowly drifting from the Jakobshavn Glacier through the bay, and the sun creates a magic sparkle in the clear Arctic air. A little further south lies Sisimiut, where the Saqqaq culture settled no less than 4,000 years ago. Experience the charm of the colourful wooden facades of today's town or explore the local nature on a hike to Tele Island. A visit to the national museum in the capital Nuuk also augurs exciting insights into Greenland's culture and history. Among other things, you will find out more about the umiak, the so-called women's boat, here. Lush tundra, little lakes and the Fox Waterfall - the Arsukfjord will fascinate you with great natural beauty which you may even get really close to with the Zodiacs. Cruising through Prins Christian Sund is an unforgettable experience, too. The jagged coastline is home to a species-rich animal kingdom, and some of the mighty glaciers extend far into the sea.
The Magic of the Ice in Disko Bay
You will also experience the culture of the Inuit in Saqqaq before the BREMEN sets course for the Eqip Sermia Glacier. While cruising or during a Zodiac ride at a safe distance from the ablation zone on the edge of the latter, you will marvel at the force of the ice. At least equally impressive and another highlight is Disko Bay with its abundance of ice. The BREMEN takes her time, enabling you to enjoy the most beautiful perspectives of this breathtaking miracle of nature from the ship or the Zodiacs. Ice giants in all shapes and sizes are slowly drifting through the vast bay. The sunlight shining on them illuminates them in a fascinating play of colours ranging from white to azure blue. As the end of your expedition draws near, you will experience unforgettable moments here that are sure to make a lasting impression on you.

In the Skjoldungensund on the rarely visited, extremely icy east coast of Greenland, you will not only enjoy a unique panorama from the Zodiacs - up to 1,000 m high mountains, impressive glaciers and waterfalls frame the tundra in which red-throated divers as well as plants such as the Alpine catchfly can be discovered. With the highest ice class for passenger ships, the BREMEN is able to advance further than other ships - off the coast of the village of Ittoqqortoormiit, the sea is frozen over for around nine months of the year. The ice conditions permitting, the Zodiacs will take you to this small settlement which was only founded in 1925 and continues to be one of the most isolated villages in Greenland to the present day.

Unforgettable Experiences on Spitsbergen
Once the BREMEN has passed the volcanic island of Jan Mayen, she will set course for the coasts of Spitsbergen. Here, an almost untouched wilderness awaits you. This world of ice and glaciers is home to polar foxes, the waters so abundant in fish attracts seals and whales, and polar bears roam the shores and the sheets of pack ice. Look forward to fascinating animal observations and nature experiences in connection with numerous Zodiac rides and landings. To begin with, the glacier near the Hornsund augurs the first highlights before the BREMEN attempts to advance to the edge of the pack ice. How high will it be? Will the ship be able to reach it? Exciting moments during which the experience of the crew and the ice class of the BREMEN are crucial. Off the coast of the island of Moffen, you will be thrilled by walrus herds that gather on the little isle after diving for food in the Arctic waters. In the Liefdefjord, the Zodiacs will take you close to the bluish-shimmering edge of the mighty Monaco Glacier. Here, you may not only get to see Arctic fulmars and kittiwakes, but possibly also a polar bear. With Ny-Alesund on the shore of the Kongsfjord, you are visiting one of the northernmost settlements in the world, which was an important base for the conquest of the North Pole. Here, a statue keeps the memory of the legendary expeditions of Roald Amundsen alive. The Zodiacs do not take you as far as the North Pole, but to the world's most northerly "bar" in Moellerhafen before an eventful expedition comes to an end in Longyearbyen.
