Abundant Bird World of the Falkland Islands
The archipelago in the
South Atlantic is home to a rich flora and fauna. While cruising off the very rarely
visited
Steeple Jason Island, you can observe an impressive phenomenon of nature -
the world's largest colony of black-browed albatrosses. If the weather is favourable, we
will set out in the Zodiacs, allowing you to watch the birds' daring take-offs and landings
at close range. An envisaged Zodiac landing on
Volunteer Beach will take you really
close to the only colony of king penguins on the Falkland Islands. There, the animals share
their habitat with Magellan and gentoo penguins. The capital
Stanley, by contrast,
invites you for a walk past Victorian houses.
Animals as Far as the Eye can See: South Georgia
Approximately 1,300 km
further southeast, glaciated high mountain ranges rise out of the vast ocean. Sixty percent
of South Georgia is covered by a layer of ice throughout the year. In bygone days, tough
seal hunters and whale catchers lived here. Today, the group of islands is devoid of humans
- and yet has far more than one million inhabitants. This is because the animals have
reclaimed the habitat. On the occasion of numerous Zodiac rides and landings, you will
experience the great diversity of species very intensively. For instance in
Salisbury
Plain,
Stromness Bay and
Gold Harbour, where you will encounter the
famous king penguins, hundreds of thousands of them filling the air with their cries.
Countless fur seals populate the island, and with a little luck, you will witness a fight
among elephant seal bulls from a safe distance - in their fight over a harem, the animals
raise the upper part of their body and then drop down on their enemy with their full
weight. In
Grytviken, the old wooden Whaler's Church offers a moment of tranquillity
before you pay your last respects to a courageous man - the graveyard not far from the
church accommodates the grave of the polar researcher Sir Ernest Shackleton. In the year
1916, Mr Shackleton's Antarctica expedition came to a happy end under dramatic
circumstances. If we get the permission to visit the Argentinean research station Orcadas
on the
South Orkney Islands, you can gain an impression of the day-to-day life of
contemporary researchers.
Enthralling Experiences: South Shetland Islands and Antarctic
Peninsula
Genuinely experiencing Antarctica is only possible aboard a ship like
the BREMEN - small, manoeuvrable and, thanks to the highest ice class for passenger ships,
capable of penetrating drift and pack ice. The expedition leader and the experts on board
know Antarctica thanks to their own travels and research stays. On the occasion of rides
and landings with the Zodiacs, they take you right to the heart of the miracles of this
unique nature. During a Zodiac ride around
Elephant Island, for instance, you will
see fur seals and chinstrap penguins building nests for their offspring due to be born
soon.
Deception Island holds a surprise in store for you - here, you can take a hot
bath in the crater lake, which is fed by volcanic springs. Even the narrow entry into the
caldera is an unforgettable experience in itself. As is a Zodiac tour in
Paradise
Bay amidst icebergs that silently drift by, taking you close to mysteriously shimmering
glacier towers. Following the passage of the spectacular
Neumayer Channel, you can
marvel at a fantastic glacier panorama in
Port Lockroy. Here, in the shade of a
historic British research station, gentoo penguins are building their nests out of little
stones. You will also sense the power of the ice as we sail through the narrow
Lemaire
Channel. The glaciated peaks to both sides of the waterway rise to heights of up to
1,000 m.
Petermann Island is probably the most southerly point of your expedition
and offers you the opportunity to observe blue-eyed cormorants as well as Adelie and gentoo
penguins at close range. Finally, the last great experience of your cruise awaits you at
the legendary
Cape Horn - provided the weather is good, we will land there with the
Zodiacs, allowing you to climb the elevated plateau. The view from up there is the
magnificent finale of your expedition.
A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition to Antarctica. The captain
will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on weather and ice conditions.
