New Impressions of the Largest Island in the World - Reykjavik - Kangerlussuaq
MS Bremen - June 15-29, 2012

Voyage BRE1212

Kalaallit Nunaat - "land of people“ - is how the Inuit refer to their native Greenland. It could just as well be called "land of seals and whales“ or "land of mountains and fjords". On this expedition, you will gain your personal impressions in the rarely visited south of the island. Discover an abundant animal kingdom in majestic landscapes and look forward to intense encounters with the hospitable Inuit.
Between Fire and Ice on Iceland
Archaic natural forces have provided the island in the North Atlantic with a spectacular appearance. From the little fishing village Grundarfjoerdur, you will set out to discover the dramatic landscape. Snæfellsnes - journey to the centre of the Earth* takes you to sights such as the Snæfellsjoekull - the volcano with its glaciated peak already impressed Jules Verne to the extent that he made it the gateway to the underworld in his novel "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth". On a hike around Kirkjufell*, you will walk around another local landmark - a steeple-shaped mountain which owes its distinctive appearance to glaciers from the Ice Age.

Fascinating World in the Arctic Ocean
Following a relaxed day at sea, the largest island in the world will appear on the horizon - welcome to your intense Greenland experience. Right at the beginning of an exciting expedition cruise, the BREMEN sets course for Prins Christian Sund at the southern tip. Ice conditions permitting, you will experience an impressive fjord landscape as we sail through the latter - with spectacular mountain panoramas, narrow passages and mighty glaciers. In this context, you may even catch sight of bearded seals on ice floes. Qaqortoq is one of the most beautiful towns in Greenland and will charm you with numerous old houses dating back to the time when it was founded around 1775. In the little museum, you will gain first insights into the life of the Inuit and the Vikings. Slightly further north, the BREMEN heads for scenic Igaliko, and the Zodiacs once again take you ashore. The small sheep farming village with 30 inhabitants was home to the bishop in the Middle Ages. Discover the ruins of the large cathedral on seemingly endless pastures which are framed by striking mountaintops. The name Arsukfjord translates into "beloved place". And you will fall in love, too - while cruising or during a Zodiac ride, you will enjoy the picturesque glacier panorama and the sight of lush tundra vegetation.

Greenland's capital Nuuk is home to approx. 15,000 people - and thus a quarter of the total population of the island. Colourful houses are scattered across the hills of the city in which old and new are combined in a typical Greenlandic manner. At the national museum, you will gain an exciting insight into the history and geology of the island before the BREMEN subsequently cruises through the Godthabfjord. The oldest traces of settlers in Sisimiut date back more than 4,000 years and thus way back into the Saqqaq culture. The abundance of seals and whales already attracted people in those days. Today, you may be lucky enough to watch the majestic marine mammals before exploring the calm tundra and the town on a hike. Kangaatsiaq is a premiere for the BREMEN - a small town which is rather modern. The tiny settlement of Ukkusissat is also rarely visited by ships - despite its fascinating location with up to 100 m high granite mountains. A surrealistically beautiful lunar landscape awaits you when the Zodiacs take you to the desert island Storoen. In this context, you will also enjoy fantastic views of the icebergs in the Uummannaq Fjord. Uummannaq itself lies on a small island. You will land there with the Zodiacs and explore the little town at the foot of the famous heart-shaped mountain.

The Magic of the Ice in Disko Bay
You will also experience the culture of the Inuit in Saqqaq before the BREMEN sets course for the Eqip Sermia Glacier. While cruising or during a Zodiac ride at a safe distance from the ablation zone on the edge of the latter, you will marvel at the force of the ice. At least equally impressive and another highlight is Disko Bay with its abundance of ice. The BREMEN takes her time, enabling you to enjoy the most beautiful perspectives of this breathtaking miracle of nature from the ship or the Zodiacs. Ice giants in all shapes and sizes are slowly drifting through the vast bay. The sunlight shining on them illuminates them in a fascinating play of colours ranging from white to azure blue. As the end of your expedition draws near, you will experience unforgettable moments here that are sure to make a lasting impression on you.
