Where Orient and Occident Meet An enchanting symbiosis of the Eastern and the Western
world awaits you in Morocco. In traditional Safi*, you have the opportunity to explore the
country's pottery capital and stroll through the lively medina dating back to the Portuguese era.
Alternatively, you may wish to experience the magic appeal of the imperial city from 1,001
Nights*. Immerse yourself in myth-enshrouded Marrakech and its Oriental glory, such as the
Bahia Palace with its cedarwood carvings, the famous market square Djemaa el Fna and the largest
souk in the country. Let yourself be whisked away to another world by the exotic colours and
fragrances.
|
Portugal: A Nation Between Pride and Melancholy Oriental joie de vivre here, fiery
Mediterranean temperament and an air of melancholy there - Lisbon is a city with
unparalleled charm*. Visit famous sites such as the Monastery of the Hieronymites and the
Monument to the Discoveries, where you can capture the spirit of the days when the seafarers set
sail for unknown shores. Or experience a tour of discovery with a difference on a literary walk
around the city*, on the occasion of which you will follow the trails of Fernando Pessoa and
other famous Portuguese writers from different eras. In Fatima*, you will sense the power of
Catholic faith - due to an apparition of the Virgin Mary which was declared credible by the church,
Fatima became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Portugal. Marvel at attractions
such as the neo-baroque Basilica Antiga.
|
From Leixoes, you will set out to explore the synthesis of the arts Porto* with
its famous Dom Luis steel bridge and the historic district, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
Alternatively, you may wish to travel to historic Guimaraes - the cradle of Portugal*. Your
day will be crowned by an exclusive classical concert in the gorgeous stock exchange building with
its magnificent Arab Room. However, the music will not only inspire you ashore, but also on board -
with numerous music experiences that enhance your cruise and will reverberate for a long time to
come.

Spain's Cathedrals, Art and Kings
La Coruna is your gateway to Europe's most significant pilgrimage destination - Santiago de
Compostela*. Every year, thousands of people pilgrimage along the Way of St. James to the
mighty cathedral. According to common belief, the grave of James the Apostle is to be found
underneath the cathedral, the facade of which also adorns the Spanish cent coins. On the excursion
La Coruna and Betanzos, capital of Galicia's Gothic art*, you have the opportunity to admire
the oldest lighthouse in the world that is still in operation. In Gijon, you will be able to
marvel at ancient works of art, for instance when you visit the impressive remnants of Roman
thermal baths on the excursion Gijon - city overlooking the Bay of Biscay*. Alternatively,
you may wish to dedicate yourself to Spanish history in Oviedo - Principado de Asturias*.
The city is considered the cradle of Spain and became the heart of the Christian recapture, the
reconquista, after the invasion by the Moors. From Bayonne, your journey takes you to one of
the world's most frequently visited pilgrimage sites of the Catholic church - Lourdes*.
Following an apparition of the Virgin Mary, a spring is believed to have emerged here, in the
Grotto of Massabielle, which is said to have healing powers. The Spanish seaside resort San
Sebastian* or Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz* on the French Atlantic coast, on the other
hand, augur refreshment rather than healing. The popular seaside resorts invite you for some hours
of relaxation - and for a fabulous finale to your multifaceted "Expedition Knowledge".
