Dream Destination Antarctic Circle - Ushuaia Round trip
MS Bremen - February 11 - 29, 2012
Voyage BRE1203
The vast expanse of the eternal ice is home to a unique animal world: whether penguins or
seals, albatrosses or elephant seals - life in Antarctica is sure to cast a spell on you. And
you will not only have front-row seats on South Georgia. The BREMEN and her Zodiacs will take
you to see the wonders of the world at close range - as far as to the south of the Antarctic
Circle.

Fascinating Falkland Islands The first ports
of call on our expedition are New Island and Carcass Island.
Here, the heart of the bird-watcher beats faster as a rich variety of bird
species awaits you including black-bellied storm-petrels, silver teal,
albatrosses and peregrine falcons. Gentoo and rockhopper penguins are also part
of this magnificent native fauna. Stanley, the capital of the Falkland
Islands with its bright Victorian houses, welcomes us as our next destination.
Look forward to exciting encounters before the BREMEN heads for South
Georgia.

Animal Paradise South Georgia The next natural paradise awaits you. The
island's rugged mountainous landscape holds over 100 glaciers. It is one of the
most important breeding grounds for king penguins, which live here in massive
colonies. You will get amazing insights into their world on the numerous Zodiac
landings, including in Salisbury Plain, Cooper Bay and Gold
Harbour. Elephant seals lie in the high tussock grass whilst petrels, skuas and
terns throng the sky: a unique experience. The grave of the Antarctic explorer Sir
Ernest Shackleton lies in the small settlement of Grytviken. You can see the
memorial plaques which have been laid on his place of rest by ships' crews over the
years in the little whaling church. We will subsequently sail through the Scotia
Sea. Weather permitting, you will also land with the Zodiacs on the remote South
Orkney Islands and visit the research station there. |
South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic
Circle
The BREMEN heads for the Antarctic Circle which James Cook was the first to cross
in 1772. Look forward to a breathtaking cruise through the eternal ice, a
longed-for goal of many adventurers to this day and home to a unique fauna which
you will experience at first hand during numerous Zodiac rides. The remarkable
silence of this lonely area which is sometimes interrupted by the spectacular
calving of a glacier accompanies you as far as Elephant Island. What a
wonderful pleasure to go visiting the penguins, fur seals and elephant seals aboard
our Zodiacs. The Zodiacs will also take you to Devil Island and to the
volcanic Paulet Island, the impressive outline of which is recognisable from
a long way off. The BREMEN cruises through the calm of the Weddell Sea to
Deception Island, a spectacular contrast to the ice-cold surroundings: you
can take a bath outdoors in the hot springs. Next on to Paradise Bay, which
certainly lives up to its name and will delight you with its spectacular glaciers
and icebergs. In the bay of Port Lockroy, you will come across whales with a
bit of luck. During the impressive passage through the narrow Lemaire
Channel you will be amazed by the most beautiful glaciers and ice landscapes
gliding past. On Petermann Island, you can watch the Adelie and gentoo
penguins diving into the sea in search of food and the seals dozing on the ice
floes off the coast. Eager expectation reigns aboard the BREMEN as she then
ventures ever further southwards and across the Antarctic Circle. Depending on
weather and ice conditions, the BREMEN will head for Detaille Island,
probably the most southerly point of your expedition. Look forward to a splendid
finale before you head back through the legendary Drake Passage towards
South America. |
A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition to Arctica. The
captain will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on weather and ice
conditions. |
