Fascinating Falkland Islands The Falkland
Islands were uninhabited for a long time. The first landing took place in 1690
and it was not until 1764 that the first settlement was established. This may
be due to the cold windy climate which, however, appears to suit the gentoo and
Magellanic penguins on Sea Lion Island very well. But as well
as these species, albatrosses, wrens and military starlings fill the air on
Barren Island. To date, Stanley is the only
"town" on the Falkland Islands. The former whaling and sealing station will
delight you with its Victorian houses and little gardens. |
Animal Paradise South Georgia One group of islands, two days
and innumerable animals. Numerous Zodiac landings including in Salisbury
Plain, Cooper Bay and Gold Harbour take
you to the heart of the breathtaking animal world. Get to meet macaroni penguins,
fur seals or elephant seals and watch the skilful flight of the albatrosses and
petrels in the Antarctic sky. A jumble of heads and beaks cover the slopes for
kilometres - thousands of king penguins stand closely packed together. In the
former whaling station of Grytviken it is worth visiting the
Whaler's Church which was brought here from Norway as prefabricated components. The
grave of the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton who was laid to rest in Grytviken
in 1922 is also worth a visit. He is viewed as a hero because he saved his crew on
Elephant Island in a remarkable operation. If the weather is good, the BREMEN will
stop over on the South Orkney Islands between South Georgia and
the Antarctic Peninsula. Visiting an Argentinean research station will give you
interesting insights into biological research. |
South Shetland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic
Circle A small draught and the highest ice class for passenger ships
allow the BREMEN to navigate routes which are impassable for other ships, to head
for remote islands which are seldom visited and to venture deep into the world of
the eternal ice. A great adventure where every day is characterised by the extremes
of Antarctica and which makes your explorer's heart beat faster. The remarkable
silence of this lonely area which is sometimes interrupted by the spectacular
calving of a glacier accompanies you as far as Elephant Island.
What a wonderful pleasure to go visiting the penguins, fur seals and elephant seals
aboard the Zodiac. On Deception Island, temptingly hot springs
invite you to take a bathe in the middle of the icy surroundings. Make sure to
accept the unusual invitation, before the ice-bedecked Paradise
Bay reveals the reason for its name. You are likely to be breathless with
amazement when the BREMEN cruises through the narrow Lemaire
Channel and heads for Port Lockroy. Glittering icebergs
and glaciers seem close enough to touch, and the sun reveals how many shimmering
colours the white of the ice can take on. On Petermann Island you
can watch the Adelie and gentoo penguins diving into the sea in search of food and
the seals dozing on the ice floes off the coast. Reverent silence resounds from the
glaciers when you approach the legendary longed-for goal of explorers and dreamers:
the Antarctic Circle. James Cook crossed it back in 1772. Follow
in his footsteps aboard the BREMEN and enjoy the sublime moment on deck with a view
of the majestic landscape of ice. The journey continues through the pack ice and
the BREMEN will try to penetrate as far to the south as possible. Depending on the
ice conditions you will reach Horseshoe Island and pay a visit to
the scientists in the Rothera Station (subject to permission).
This is where you take your leave of Antarctica, which you can only experience so
intensively with the BREMEN, before heading through the Drake
Passage back to South America.

A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition to Arctica. The
captain will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on weather and ice
conditions. |
