Falkland Islands: Bird Paradise in the South Atlantic Encounter a
true paradise for birds at first hand with the BREMEN - look forward to an
intense experience. The Falkland Islands are a wonderful playground for birds
as only around 2,500 people have settled here since 1764. On your very first
Zodiac ride to New Island you will come across large colonies of
albatrosses and rockhopper penguins. And on a hike on Carcass Island you
might spot gentoo penguins, turkey vultures, endemic Falkland pipits or the
flightless steamer duck. After the encounters with unspoilt nature you will be
welcomed by the small capital town of Stanley with its brightly-coloured
Victorian houses.
To the King Penguins on South Georgia This highest point of
this group of islands towers thousands of metres above the sea. It is not
lonely here, but full of life. Sea lions and elephant seals play around the
coasts, petrels fly across the blue sky and king penguins have huge breeding
grounds here. On the many Zodiac landings, for instance in Salisbury
Plain, Fortuna Bay and Gold Harbour, you will be able to
watch the parent birds looking after their chicks. The roles are clearly
defined: one looks after the chick and the other goes fishing. A king penguin
can easily catch up to 20 kg fish on a "hunting trip" like this. The other bird
species such as skuas, pintails and terns also continuously scour the water and
land for food. It is more peaceful at the grave of the British scientist Sir
Ernest Shackleton who was buried in the small settlement of Grytviken.
Subsequently, we will set out across the Scotia Sea to the South Orkney
Islands. If the weather is kind to us, we will launch the Zodiacs and visit
an Argentinean research station.
South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula Approach
Antarctica as only very few travellers can: on a ship with the highest ice
class for passenger ships and aboard the Zodiacs. These sturdy inflatables take
you into the midst of the magical icy world where a host of unforgettable
impressions await you. Elephant Island is not the only place where
elephant seals, fur seals and penguins will be waiting to welcome you. One of
the numerous Zodiac landings takes you to the volcanic Paulet Island,
the impressive scenery of which is recognisable from a long way off. The BREMEN
cruises through the calm of the Weddel Sea on the way to Devil
Island, taking you to imposing icebergs and ice floes where Adelie penguins
often gather. A hot and cold experience awaits you on Deception Island:
here you can warm yourself with a swim in hot springs on the lava beach in a
sheltered bay. You will be enthralled by the oscillating play of light and
colour from the huge glaciers in Paradise Bay. The cracks and caves
which have carved themselves into the ice gleam with a vitriolic blue. The
power which emanates from mighty glaciers also makes a vivid impression in the
narrow Lemaire Channel. Lively penguins will delight you once more on
Petermann Island. Watch the flurry of activity of the Adelie and gentoo
penguins raising their young. With a bit of luck you will witness the "race for
food" towards the parent penguins where at first only the fastest youngster
gets the food. The natural harbour of Port Lockroy framed by two
magnificent glaciers is an impressive finale to your unforgettable expedition
before the BREMEN sails through the Drake Passage back to South
America.
A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition to
Antarctica. The captain will decide on the best possible alternatives depending
on weather and ice conditions.
