Exciting Adventures: Cape Horn, South Shetland Islands and Antarctic
Peninsula
The BREMEN sets course for the legendary
Cape Horn
where, if the weather is good, you will land with the Zodiacs. From the observation
platform, you will have excellent views across the South Atlantic - and see eventful days
with numerous Zodiac rides and landings ahead of you. We will subsequently be headed for
the
Weddell Sea - in
Brown Bluff, the Zodiacs take you
ashore, allowing for encounters with the Adelie penguins that are incubating their eggs in
a large colony here. The animals have built their nests between brown table mountains and
bizarre moss-covered rock formations. Zodiac landings are planned on
Devil
Island, too, where you can enjoy an unforgettable panorama of the Antarctic
landscape from the observation point.
Paulet Island is not only home to
around 100,000 Adelie penguins, but also to a large colony of blue-eyed cormorants. Snow
petrels and Wilson's storm petrels are nesting between the remnants of old stone huts which
bear evidence to a dramatic story - it was here that the men of the Nordenskjoeld
Expedition had to spend the winter of 1903 under the most difficult conditions after their
ship was destroyed by the ice. A more recent chapter in the history of the discovery of
Antarctica will be revealed to you on the
Melchior Islands. Here, the
guests and crew of the BREMEN 2003 discovered a previously unheard-of island and a channel
which have since been officially named "Bremen Island" and "Bremen Channel". Become a
discoverer yourself in the famous
Paradise Bay, where you will marvel at
the indeed paradisiacal and impressive landscape during a Zodiac ride amidst ice floes.
Fantastic views of glaciers which the BREMEN slowly sails past also await you on the
passage of the
Neumayer Channel. After we have cruised through the latter,
the Zodiacs will take you ashore in
Port Lockroy. This is where the
English operated a research station until the 1960s which today accommodates a little
museum and the southernmost post office in the world.
Across the Antarctic Circle with Pioneering Spirit
The ice cracks
around the reinforced bow of the BREMEN, we advance further and further south, and you are
approaching a legendary destination only few people have reached before you - the
Antarctic Circle. On
Detaille Island, you will be greeted by Adelie penguins
and seals when you land with the Zodiacs in order to visit the remnants of an old British
research station.
Perhaps in the company of whales, the BREMEN sets course in a northerly direction again,
where you will enjoy additional unforgettable Antarctic moments together with the
experienced experts. On
Petermann Island, the Zodiacs take you to Adelie and gentoo
penguins that share the habitat with skuas - which is why the penguins need to keep a
particularly watchful eye on their offspring here. With the
Lemaire Channel, one of
the most beautiful waterway passages not only in Antarctica, but worldwide awaits you . It
was first described by Eduard Dallmann in 1873, who sailed through it during the first
German Antarctica expedition. While the BREMEN makes her way through the narrow channel,
you will be thrilled by the sight of the snow-covered, spectacularly shaped mountains that
rise to heights of up to 1,000 m on either side.
Deception Island offers a contrast
to the latter - on black lava beaches, volcanic springs invite you for a hot bath - in the
middle of Antarctica. On
Livingston Island, you will be able to observe chinstrap
and gentoo penguins as well as mighty elephant seals - final fascinating encounters on an
eventful expedition. …
A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition to Antarctica. The captain
will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on weather and ice conditions.
