Great Britian - Impressions of a Majestic Land - Kiel to
Hamburg
MS Europa - July 5-19, 2012
Fairies, will-o'-the-wisps, lake monsters - they are virtually
made for the rugged expanses of Scotland with their deep lakes. Cities such as Edinburgh
present the cultural facets of the green island, and the wild and romantic coasts in Wales
their scenic appeal. Ireland, too, is well worth a visit, welcoming us with whiskey and Celtic
history. If, in addition to all this, you stroll through gorgeous gardens and celebrate the art
of afternoon tea on board, days in style will be rounded off to perfection.

Kiel Before you set sail with the EUROPA in Kiel, the Hanseatic city of
Hamburg invites you to explore it individually*.
Leith (Edinburgh)/Scotland/Great Britain Lively historic alleys, the "Royal
Mile" and high above all this mighty Edinburgh Castle - Scotland's capital city presents its
highlights*. Little Rosslyn Chapel* dating back to the 15th century is an architectural gem
and shrouded by legends of Templars and Freemasons. Together with our garden art expert, you will
set out for Jupiter Artland*, an extraordinary outdoor area which combines modern sculptures
and garden art. Alternatively, you can visit the private country home gardens* of Tyninghame and
Greywalls.
Invergordon/Scotland/Great Britain From the little port town, the journey takes
you to the shore of famous Loch Ness* with the distinctive ruins of mediaeval Urquhart
Castle. Or would you like to admire Loch Ness from above? A helicopter flight over the
Highlands* presents the rugged beauty of the Scottish landscape from a bird's eye view.
Portree/Skye/Scotland/Great Britain Welcome to the "isle of cloud", the largest
island of the Inner Hebrides. Stroll through the picturesque settlement with its little fishing
port and enjoy the views across the Sound of Raasay. It was here in Portree that "Bonnie Prince
Charles" and Flora MacDonald, who had helped the prince flee after an unsuccessful invasion in
Great Britain, said farewell in 1746. In the Highlands, she is still held in high esteem and
considered a heroine for this until the present day. At the Aros-Skye Heritage Centre, you can see
how other people lived on the island over the past 300 years.
Dublin/Ireland Almost one third of the Irish population lives in the capital
city Dublin*. Here, you will also find the largest church in the country: St. Patrick's
Cathedral, which was built more than 800 years ago. The venerable Old Library on the grounds of
Trinity College is home to the mediaeval Book of Kells*. On the trails of ancient Ireland*,
you will travel to the little cemetery of Monasterboice with two of Ireland's oldest high
crosses.
Cobh/Ireland The Old Head of Kinsale* towers in the air on the shore of
the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse went into operation in 1853 and nowadays offers fantastic views
across the sea from its observation platform. A few kilometres from here, the colourful little
fishing town Kinsale invites you to stroll through its mediaeval townscape. When we visit the
Old Midleton Distillery* with the largest copper still in the world, you will gain insights
into the history of whiskey.
Milford Haven/Wales/Great Britain The birthplace of Henry Tudor, the Norman
Pembroke Castle*, is perhaps the most beautiful castle throughout Wales. Nearby Tenby* is a
popular seaside resort the narrow alleys of which invite you for a leisurely stroll. On a
coastal hike* past small cottages as well as the old and the new lighthouse, you will
experience the scenic landscape of Pembrokeshire.
Tresco/Isles of Scilly/Great Britain The mild climate has turned the Tresco
Abbey Gardens into a botanic treasure - exotic plants from all over the world thrive on the
grounds of an old Benedictine Abbey.
Penzance/England/Great Britain In 1050, Edward the Confessor gave the
Benedictine monks of the French Mont Saint-Michel a wonderful gift: the sister monastery St.
Michael's Mount* on English soil. The sculptress Barbara Hepworth lived and worked in the
artists' town St Ives*. Today, her house and garden serve as a museum for her works of art.
Or perhaps you would like to stroll through the breathtakingly beautiful gardens of Bosvigo
House*?
Cowes/Isle of Wight/England/Great Britain "Cowes Week" and the "Admirals Cup"
have made this little town famous among sailors from all over the world. Queen Victoria and Prince
Albert also frequently visited the Isle of Wight, and so today, you have the opportunity to explore
royal Cowes* with St. Mildred's Church and Osborne House, the former summer residence of the
couple.
Dover/England/Great Britain From the English channel to the Great Stour - visit
Canterbury*, the centre of the Anglican church in England. The city's impressive cathedral
is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Or you may wish
to opt for a transfer* to England's capital city London and do as you please in the world
metropolis - perhaps some shopping at Harrod's or a visit to the Tate Modern? Alternatively, the
romantic Sissinghurst Castle Garden* and the wonderful Great Dixter Gardens* await you.
Hamburg In the mood for a walk through the park Planten un Blomen? Explore
Hamburg individually* before embarking on your return journey.
* These arrangements are not included in the cruise price. The shore activities listed here
are in the planning stage and are subject to changes.
