Voyage HAN1403

Inconceivable nature, a unique animal kingdom, a country of wonders - in New Zealand, creation has sculpted a paradise for discoverers. The manoeuvrable HANSEATIC and her Zodiacs take you right to the heart of vast fjords as well as natural preserves and enable you to experience the home of the Maori – the “land of the long white cloud“ – incredibly intensively on this expedition.
Date Destination
Fri 21-Feb-2014 Bluff/New Zealand, departure 19.00 hrs
Sat 22-Feb-2014 Fiordland National Park (cruising in Dusky and Breaksea Sound)
Fascinating Discoveries on the Water, Ashore and in the Air
Right at the beginning of your expedition, you can look forward to overwhelming moments in one of the most magnificent nature reserves in the world - the HANSEATIC cruises through the Fiordland National Park. Waterfalls thunderously empty into the fjords, impressive peaks are reflected in the deep blue bays. Marvel at the evergreen slopes of Dusky and Breaksea Sound before the HANSEATIC spends a considerable amount of time in the famous Milford Sound to enable you to experience this unique miracle of nature intensively.
Sun 23-Feb-2014 Milford Sound
The steep slopes overgrown with rainforest rise out of the water to heights of more than 1,000 m, and the fog almost magically hovers between the mountaintops. The fabulous landscape is crowned by the rugged Mitre Peak.
Mon 24-Feb-2014 Stewart Island
Discover New Zealand’s presumably best-kept secret Stewart Island from a helicopter when you explore Paterson Inlet from the air*. Alternatively, you may wish to follow experienced rangers to the bird sanctuary Ulva Island*, in the untouched forests of which you will look out for kiwis and bellbirds.
Tue 25-Feb-2014 - 1-Mar-2014 New Zealand’s South Island (Dunedin, Lyttelton, Kaikoura Peninsula , Abel Tasman National Park , Marlborough Sounds )
New Zealand’s rich bird world also awaits you near Dunedin when you watch royal albatrosses and yellow-eyed penguins on the Otago Peninsula*. The port of Lyttelton is a flooded volcanic crater. The Banks Peninsula, which you will get to know on the excursion picturesque Akaroa*, also owes its idyllic green landscape to volcanic eruptions. In the sheltered bay with the turquoise blue sea, you may catch sight of sea lions and dolphins. Or you could travel on the TransAlpine Express to Arthur’s Pass* and enjoy breathtaking views across the mountains and the highland.
Truly Close to New Zealand’s Miracles of Nature
Animals living in the wild, untouched forests and majestic fjords - over the days to come, you will explore New Zealand’s magnificent nature in the context of numerous Zodiac rides and landings. The Kaikoura Peninsula, for instance, is a veritable paradise for seals and sea lions. With a little luck, you will also catch sight of whales here. The small Abel Tasman National Park is famous for its many bays and the granite cliffs well worth seeing. Here, the local conditions determine our activities – the options range from a walk through extensive forests via a hike along the coast to relaxed hours on the beach. An unforgettable expedition day also awaits you in the Marlborough Sounds, a huge and complex labyrinth of waterways with countless islands and bays. Follow the traces of James Cook in Ship Cove where his “Endeavour“ once lay at anchor or, given favourable conditions, land on Motuara Island, which is home to New Zealand fur seals and endemic birds. For additional memorable sights, the HANSEATIC will subsequently cruise through Queen Charlotte Sound.
Sun 2-Mar-2014 - 6-Mar-2014 New Zealand’s North Island (Wellington, Napier, cruising off White Island, Tauranga)
On New Zealand’s North Island, you will be welcomed by Wellington. Discover the capital located amidst a spectacular landscape on a helicopter flight* if the weather is favourable or get to know endemic bird species such as bellbirds, kakas or robins at the nature reserve Zealandia*. The gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers* near the small city of Napier allows for additional bird observations. From Napier, you can also set out to visit two of the most renowned vineyards in New Zealand*. The following day, you may look forward to entirely different impressions - the HANSEATIC will cruise as close as possible off the coast of White Island, New Zealand’s only still active volcanic island, and offer you spectacular views of the rough forces of nature from the deck. Similar elemental forces have shaped the scenery of Rotorua, New Zealand’s thermal centre* near Tauranga. A walk takes you past bubbling mud pools, steaming crevices and gorgeous lakes before a premiere awaits you towards the end of your cruise.
Fri 7-Mar-2014 Great Barrier Island.  Auckland/New Zealand, arrival 22.00 hrs with overnight stay on board.
For the very first time, the HANSEATIC sets course for Great Barrier Island – a destination for true discoverers and flexible expedition experiences with its white beaches, pristine forests and hot springs and the magnificent finale of your fantastic New Zealand voyage.
Sat 8-Mar-2014 Disembarkation in Auckland, New Zealand.
