From Gambia to Ghana: Myths and Nature The
first stage of your unforgettable "Expedition Knowledge" takes you to Gambia, a
tiny country on the banks of the river of the same name. Its capital
Banjul is located at the point where the river flows into the Atlantic.
On the excursion impressions of Banjul and surroundings*, you will
experience an interesting visit to the crocodile basin in Bakau, the water of
which is said to boost female fertility. If you set off on a walk and boat
trip in Makasutu Nature Park*, you can get to know the country's flora and
fauna and subsequently gain an insight into the traditional culture during a
dance performance. For the French, Conakry is the 'African Paris' - and
for you, it is the starting point of a fabulous tour of discovery. Explore the
offshore Îles de Los, and if you decide to go swimming on the island of
Roume*, you can spend a day on the beach under the African sun. Ghana's
natural reserves of gold were the basis of the wealth of the legendary Ashanti
kingdom. In the 1920s, the urban districts of Takoradi and Sekondi grew
into one. On a trip through the twin city and its environment*, you will
gather impressions of the African attitude towards life. In the Kakum
National Park*, you can plunge into Ghana's 'green gold' - crossing
suspended bridges among the waving treetops of the rainforest, you may be lucky
enough to catch sight of elephants or long-tailed monkeys. The German heritage
of Lome will be revealed to you on a city tour* of Togo's
capital, founded back in the 18th century by the Ewe tribe. Visit the Ewe
villages* and take part in a voodoo ceremony to be initiated into the
mysteries of their religion. In the neighbouring country of Benin, the seat of
government is Cotonou. This is the starting point for the excursion
Cotonou and Ganvie*. Here, in Africa's biggest village built on stilts,
life is lived completely on the water. As well as schools and markets, there is
even a football field... Cameroon's lively centre Douala is situated at
the mouth of the River Wouri. Until 1960, the country's destiny was determined
by a succession of colonial masters, whose traces you can follow on the
excursion on the trails of colonial times - Mount Cameroon and Limbe*.
Or you may prefer a landscape tour to the Ekom Waterfalls*. Mangrove
swamps, rainforest and plantations are characteristic of the mainland region of
Equatorial Guinea, Mbini (Rio Muni). Its biggest city Bata has fantastic
beaches to offer. On Sao Tome and Principe, you can gather
island impressions* on a round trip that takes you to a plantation and
to the Sao Nicolau waterfalls. A fascinating kaleidoscope of atmospheres and
impressions also awaits you in the lively metropolis of Luanda, the
capital of Angola. On a city tour*, you will discover the traces left by
the Portuguese, who ruled here for around 400 years. After that, a boat trip to
Mussulo Island* augurs relaxation on endless beaches. The unadulterated
African feeling of being alive also awaits you in the port city of
Lobito. Perched on a narrow spit of land, just its location alone is
spectacular. Finally, you can experience the impressive highlights of Lobito
and Benguela*, for example on the museum ship "Zaire" - a symbol of peace
for the young nation. |
Namibia: Art Nouveau and the Desert With its incomparable
nature and traces of history, Namibia augurs unforgettable moments. Starting from
Walvis Bay, the Namib Desert and Swakopmund* offer plenty to
discover. In this surrealistically beautiful lunar landscape, you will be amazed by
the Welwitschia plants, which can live to an age of 2000 years. Another adventure
is the desert safari* in a 4 x 4. Our experts will introduce you to the
flora and fauna, and with a bit of luck, you may get a glimpse of native palmato
geckos and desert chameleons. A visit to Luderitz is a fascinating and
extraordinary experience. German art nouveau houses line the coast, each trying to
outdo the other in brilliance of colour. The trip to Kolmanskuppe* will also
be memorable. The abandoned lordly houses of the former diamond town are a last
bizarre sight in the midst of the desert - before you take your leave of this
fascinating rediscovered continent in Cape Town.
