England: Royal Magnificence You have never
seen London like this before - on the Thames, the HANSEATIC glides right
through the heart of the busy metropolis. An unforgettable sight! On the
panoramic trip with St Paul's Cathedral*, you will visit the most
important tourist attractions. Truly majestic glimpses can be had on the
excursion royal London with visit to Buckingham Palace*, including an
exceptionally interesting viewing of the royal stables. And the quiet side
of London* - something of a dark horse - is also worth discovering. Here
you follow the towpath along the Regent's Canal to Camden, passing beautiful
villas as you go. The upmarket side of idyllic England can be seen in and
around Cowes on the Isle of Wight. On an island trip by vintage
car*, you will travel through the lovely landscape in style. Or you can
make a visit to Royal Osborne House*, the former summer residence of
Queen Victoria, where the majority of the rooms have remained unchanged. |
Holy Relics in France and Spain When the sea withdraws from
around the historic district of St. Malo, a wide beach extends
around the fortified walls. Likewise, the monastery island of Mont Saint
Michel* also offers a perfectly dry passage at low tide. For centuries
people have come on pilgrimage to the relics of the Benedictine monastery, which
almost seems to be closer to heaven than to earth. Heavenly pleasures are certainly
offered by the fresh delicacies which you will sample in Cancale, the
oyster capital of Brittany*. The landmark tower of La
Coruna, the Tower of Hercules, has shown seafarers the way for the last
1900 years. This was where English pilgrims set out in former times for the most
important pilgrimage destination in Europe. You can follow in their footsteps
yourself for the last 9.5 kilometres if you join the hike covering the last
section of the Way of St. James*. On the expert excursion: Through
green Galicia to Santiago de Compostela*, Dr Halina Wingerath will take
you by bus and on foot through the panorama of the central Galician range to the
Monte do Gozo. From this height you will get your first view of the cathedral
which, according to legend, houses the relics of the Apostle St. James. |
Portugal: Sweet Wine, Sweet Melancholy Starting from the port
of Leixoes, you arrive in Porto. On a river trip with port wine
tasting*, you will pass the city's five famous bridges. Alternatively, you can
find out about one of Portugal's oldest cities on the expert excursion: Guided
walk around the "baroque city" of Porto*, during which you will visit the house
of Henry the Navigator and the romantic cathedral. Between seven hills at the mouth
of the Tejo - this was where people set out to discover the world. Investigate the
history of Lisbon on the excursion Lisbon - politics and history*,
which will take you from the Presidential Palace to the Alfama. Vasco da Gama is
the focus of your interest on the expert excursion: The Portuguese late Gothic
period and the influence of the discoverers*, when you visit the Monastery of
the Hieronymites and the Monument to the Discoveries. Another world altogether will
enchant you on the landscape tour to Queluz and Sintra*. The former summer
residence Palácio de Queluz was closely modelled on the Palace of Versailles. |
Moorish Style in Spain and Morocco
Cadiz was only linked to the mainland by a narrow sandbar before the
construction of the Carranza Bridge. The expert excursion: Arab and Christian
architecture in Seville* takes you to the capital of Andalusia. One of the
highest of its numerous church towers is the Giralda bell tower of the late
Gothic-style cathedral. Both here and in the royal palace of Alcázar, you will
recognise the traces of the many years of Moorish hegemony. As an alternative, you
can visit Arcos and Jerez*, two of Andalusia's typical white villages. Or
join a guided walk around Cadiz with cathedral visit*. The modern yacht port
of Marina Smir is your starting point for the guided walk around
Tetouan*. The latter's medina is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and
remains the commercial centre of the region to this day - making it a lively finish
to your multifaceted "Expedition Knowledge". |
