Eternally Beautiful Rome
All roads lead to Rome, and from Civitavecchia, too, it is not at all far to what used to be the capital of the world. On the excursion Rome* you will visit - for the most part on foot - the classic and timeless sights of the Eternal City. Alternatively, Dr Ralph Quadflieg will introduce you to the most important Etruscan centres of the region on the expert excursion: In the land of the Etruscans - Tarquinia, Cerveteri and Lake Bracciano*. Or you can join Dr Volker Gebhardt to study fantastic frescoes on the expert excursion: The Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola and the wonderful world of the Renaissance gardens of Latium*. You will be no less impressed by the pentagonal design of this Renaissance masterpiece.

Amalfi and Italy's Divine Islands
In bygone times, the little town of Amalfi was a mighty Italian maritime republic. Surrounded by lemon orchards, you will enjoy the view over the clear water of its bays. On the expert excursion: Salerno and the Greek temples of Paestum*, you can join Dr Volker Gebhardt in discovering the city, which was originally founded by the Greeks. The Normans established the first medical school of the Middle Ages here as well as building one of the most beautiful cathedrals in southern Italy, the cathedral church of San Matteo. The Doric temples of Paestum tell the story of the Greek colony of Poseidonia and are among the three best preserved temples in the world. Of the seven volcanic Aeolian Islands, Lipari is the largest. On the expert excursion: Guided walk around the city and archaeological museum of Lipari*, you ascend with Dr Volker Gebhardt to the castle hill, which accommodates the ruins of a Spanish castle as well as a baroque cathedral and the museum. On the expert excursion: Aeolian impressions - island tour of Lipari and archaeological museum *, you can accompany Dr Ralph Quadflieg past tiny villages, beaches and caves to the best panoramic viewpoints. If the weather is favourable, you may look forward to landing with the Zodiacs on Stromboli , which is famous for its active volcano of the same name.

Sicily - Simply Irresistible
The historic centre of Syracuse is situated on the offshore island of Ortigia, which is linked with the modern city and the Parco Archeologico by two bridges. The Parco Archeologico accommodates one of the biggest Greek amphitheatres, with room for 15,000 spectators. Step into the shoes of the actors of antiquity while you listen to Dr Volker Gebhardt's exciting lectures on the expert excursion: Excavations of the Greek metropolis of Syracuse, with visit to the catacombs*. Baroque Noto* was once destroyed by an earthquake - but in 1693, the metropolis was rebuilt in the midst of olive groves, and today, it is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. You can travel further back in the past when you set out from Porto Empedocle on the expert excursion: The archaeological zone and the museum of Agrigento*. Dr Ralph Quadflieg will give you a fascinating and captivating account of the past greatness, power and cultural florescence of the former Greek city. And what would antiquity be without its great heroic sagas? In Trapani at the foot of Mount Erice, which offers you a spectacular view across the Gulf, you can also follow the traces of Aeneas, who is believed to have put in to land here. On the expert excursion: The Greek excavations of Selinunte and Segesta*, Dr Volker Gebhardt will have you marvelling at temples and theatres set in a gently sloping landscape. Like Trapani, which was colonised by Greeks, Phoenicians, Arabs and Normans in succession, Sicily's capital Palermo has experienced many rulers, too. On the expert excursion: The cathedral of Monreale and the church La Martorana in Palermo*, Dr Ralph Quadflieg will show you the jewels of the historic centre. Could there be a more radiant finale to an "Expedition Knowledge" combining so many fascinating experiences?

An Italian Journey
Due to its unique location and the natural harbour, Genoa has ben popular throughout the eras. On the expert excursion: Genoa, UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site*, Dr Volker Gebhardt will knowledgeably introduce you to Renaissance and baroque art treasures. Alternatively, an excursion to the Italian Riviera and Portofino* takes you along the Ligurian coast, continuing to Portofino by boat. Portofino's natural harbour amidst an enchanting landscape presents a delightful final destination.
