Voyage HAN1215
English Excursions Guaranteed!
Roald Amundsen had been travelling for three years when he became the first person ever to
successfully sail through the legendary Northwest Passage. Today, you can embark on an
expedition with the HANSEATIC which not only follows his trails, but also investigates the
question what impact the climate changes are having on the ice conditions. En route, you will
encounter polar bears, whales and numerous testimonies to the culture of the Inuit in dramatic

Unforgettable Days in Alaska and Canada Your
adventure Northwest Passage begins on an Alaskan promontory that extends far
into the sea. An old settlement in Point Hope which was partly built
using whale bones shows just how imaginative the Inuit were when it came to
adapting to the local conditions. Whales also continue to play a part to the
present day in Barrow. Every summer, numerous whale species pass the
coast of the northernmost settlement in the USA. With a bit of luck, you may
spot rough-legged buzzards and even brown bears on Herschel Island.
Having landed on the island with the Zodiacs, you will subsequently explore it
together with Canadian rangers. The clouds of fog of Smoking Hills
almost mysteriously rise on the horizon. With the Zodiacs, you will get very
close to the pyritaceous coal deposits that autoignited centuries ago. If you
join a hike to the hills in Holman, the experts will reveal to you the
secrets surrounding the inukshuks. Alternatively, you may wish to visit the
arts centre to learn more about the culture of the Inuit. Spectacular sights
await you off the coast of Johansen Bay and Ross Point. On a
hike, you might catch a glimpse of musk oxen and Arctic foxes and will
certainly enjoy the fantastic view across the bay and the vast tundra from an
elevation. In Cambridge Bay, a tour takes you to the heritage of the
Norwegian Arctic explorer Roald Amundsen - the wreck of the "Maud" with which
he successfully tackled the Northeast Passage in 1905 lies off the coast. Your
route continues to follow the trails of Amundsen past Jenny Lind Island
and along the narrow passage of Peel Sound. The call "polar bear ahead!"
could ring out any time, as the king of the Arctic frequently roams the
territory in search of food. In Resolute, an ancient settlement of the
Thule culture is waiting to be discovered. However, the little town owes its
name to one of the ships that set out to look for the missing John Franklin
Expedition. Traces of the winter camp and graves of that same expedition were
found on Beechey Island. Here, you can pay your last respects to John
Franklin. When we reach Dundas Harbor , you will be one of the limited
number of adventurers who have sailed through the Northwest Passage aboard a
ship. On the periphery of the tundra, you have a good chance of encountering
grazing musk oxen. |
Greenland: Constantly Changing Views Unique panoramas await you
along the coast of Greenland. For instance on the 1,175 m high local mountain of
Uummannaq, the name of which translates into "in the shape of a
seal's heart". Against the backdrop of colourful houses, whales can frequently be
seen in the sea and seals ashore. The most famous son of
Ilulissat, by contrast, is the discoverer Knud Rasmussen. Join the
experts on a hike to the Ilulissat Icefjord, where the masses of ice rise out of
the sea like mountains. A spectacular sight! Subsequently, you will also enjoy
unforgettable views of drifting icebergs while cruising in Disko
Bay with its abundance of ice. The area surrounding
Sisimiut, on the other hand, boasts a rich population of whales,
reindeer and seals and has therefore been popular for thousands of years - not only
among the Inuit. In the Godthabfjord, the attractive passage
through one of the largest fjord regions in the world awaits you before you visit
the post office of Santa Claus near Nuuk. Wonderful historic
buildings from the colonial area and modern art - reliefs sculpted into granite
walls - are a major attraction in Qaqortoq. In neighbouring
Hvalsey, the impressive ruins of a farmstead of the Vikings tell
of a history that dates back 1,000 years. As we continue our journey through the
narrow Prins Christian Sund, you will get a close view of
Greenland's glacier world one last time. The HANSEATIC eventually sails through the
Skjoldungenfjord en route to Reykjavik, and the
great adventure Northwest Passage comes to an end. |
A change in itinerary may become necessary on this expedition through the Northwest
Passage. The captain will decide on the best possible alternatives depending on
weather and ice conditions.
