Before the Romans came to regard the Mediterranean as mare nostrum (our sea), it was
the Greeks who dominated the region colonizing places as far afield as Italy, Sicily and Asia
Minor. Between them these two great cultures left behind a legacy of archaeological treasures. It
is not surprising, therefore, that the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome dominate our thoughts
about the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean. It was, after all, the philosophers, poets,
historians, politicians, artists and scientists of these two dynamic societies that laid the
foundations of our own civilization.
