Sail historical routes to the famous ancient towns and picturesque harbors of the Aegean: Piraeus (Athens) – Istanbul

July 12-19, 2015
Voyage SC1524

Three significant excavation sites

It is almost like walking through an outdoor museum. Whether you are in Mycenae admiring its Lion Gate and Cyclopean masonry, or standing between the impressive white pillars of the Trajan temple in Pergamon, one thing is for sure: History comes to life in the Aegean. The town

of Ephesus also offers a vivid insight into how life was in ancient times. The theatre, luxurious bath complexes and Library of Celsus stand as a testament to the prosperity that this town enjoyed for a thousand years.

The Jerusalem of the Aegean: Patmos

The idyllic island of Patmos is believed to be the place where John the Evangelist wrote the Book of Revelation. The grotto where he is said to have had his apocalyptic visions is one of the holiest sites for followers of the Greek Orthodox Church. The monastery built in his name has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The charming capital of the Cyclades

Ermoupolis, capital of the island of Syros and the entire Cyclades, was built on two hills and is a unique architectural accomplishment. A great number of monumental neo-classical buildings create the impression of a sophisticated city. As you ascend, you will witness the opulence and vastness of this construction give way to a maze of narrow passages, creating a more medieval atmosphere. But wherever you are in this city, you will see that the cafés and taverns are filled with Greeks alone and the hordes of tourists are nowhere to be seen.
